Comadre Coppola gets us with another gem:
He is also apparently a little scared of Miss Mel, because I called him six times today and the no answer. I tricked him to answer once and he said he was in a meeting. You can throw but cannot take it.
Here is my response to him, since he refuses to publish anything against anyone named Valdez or Robles:
The question of the Fire Department restructuring, and whether it is beneficial to the City, is easily settled. I ask that that benefits to the City by having this restructure go through now and not in two months be articulated by City officials or the 4 council members who voted for it, or even by this newspaper. How is the reduction of firefighter personnel against the recommendations of NFPA providing a benefit to the City? My point is that this restructure, which I agree should take place, is being shoved through by not following what the City Attorney calls, “proper” procedure.
I also ask the Editor of this paper to comment on the issue of the hiring that I had alluded to in this very paper, a hiring that he has told me “stinks, and stinks way back.” Politics are chosen by all sides, not least of which is this newspaper. This is my argument with Mr. Coppola, and an argument that has been going on for years. I understand that this is the way it is done, but please do not feign disgust and dishonor when Octavio Garcia Von Borstel spends $20,000 foolishly, but fail to publish similar allegations by Olga Valdez in the name of having to be 100% accurate or that they are basically good people caught up in bad things, another thing mentioned by Mr. Coppola. The newspaper edits its comments in the blog much in the same way.
The fact is that this restructure is being shoved through in an unconventional way; it is reducing the firefighter protection to the city, and is giving huge raises to 4 individuals. The Fire Chief and the City Council members have stated that this needed to be done in this day and time because they were not raises, but a restructure as a benefit to the city. This is simple. Please articulate what benefits the City has by pushing it through in February versus pushing it through in April when the budget hearings are held and when fire protection does not having to be minimized in order to do it. There are none, so they are simply raises, given to 4 individuals out of 300, in the amount of $60,000, during a crushing and painful recession, under questionable methods.
